Fetal short axis view at the level of mid-portion of the ventricles:

  • Anterior right and posterior left ventricle

  • Left ventricle has two two papillary muscles and right ventricle has one papillary muscle in the center

  • Normal biventricular systolic function

Fetal short axis view at the level of the ventricles:

  • Sweeping from apex to the mid-portion of the ventricles

  • Note triangular shape of the right ventricle (right ventricular outflow tract seen at the end of the clip) and ellipsod shape of the left ventricle

  • Anterior right and posterior left ventricle ((fetal chest (anterior), spine (posterior))

  • Left ventricle has two two papillary muscles and right ventricle has one papillary muscle in the center

  • Normal biventricular systolic function

Fetal short axis view at the level of the mid-portion of the ventricles (at the level of the atrioventricular valves):

  • Superior/anterior ventricle (right ventricle) has one papillary muscle

  • Inferior/posterior ventricle (left ventricle) has two papillary muscles

  • Anterior and posterior mitral valve leaflets with normal mobility

  • Normal biventricular systolic function

  • Triangular shape of the right ventricle and ellipsoid shape of the left ventricle

  • No obvious defects along the visualized part of the ventricular septum

Fetal short axis view at the level of the mid-portion of the ventricles (at the level of the atrioventricular valves):

  • Superior/anterior ventricle (right ventricle) has one papillary muscle

  • Inferior/posterior ventricle (left ventricle) has two papillary muscles

  • Anterior and posterior mitral valve leaflets with normal mobility

  • No obvious cleft in the mitral valve anterior leaflet (should be confirmed by color imaging, but minor valve abnormalities can be missed by fetal echocardiogram)

  • Normal biventricular systolic function

  • Triangular shape of the right ventricle and ellipsoid shape of the left ventricle

  • No obvious defects along the visualized part of the ventricular septum

  • Visualization of the aortic arch from its central origin to the level of the diaphragm
  • Note the echolucency of the diaphragm

These are examples of normal fetal short axis clips of the fetal ventricles.
