• Pericardial Tamponade
    • Large circumferential pericardial effusion
    • Heart appears to swing in a large cavity of fluid
    • Cardiac tamponade physiology
      • Diastolic RV collapse
  • Echocardiographic Assessment: Parasternal Long Axis
    • Assess for pericardial effusion
      • anteriorly, posteriorly and circumferentially
      • measure fluid by 2D at end diastole
    • Sweep to tricuspid valve and assess tricuspid inflow variability spectral Doppler 
    • Assess for right ventricular diastolic collapse
    • Assess ventricular systolic function qualitatively 

  • Transducer placed on the left sternal border
  • 3rd or 4th intercostal space
  • Notch pointed towards the patient's right shoulder (11 o'clock)
