• Pericardial Tamponade
    • Large circumferential pericardial effusion
    • Right ventricular diastolic collapse
  • Pericardial Tamponade
    • Spectral Doppler of aortic outflow demonstrating significant outflow variability (~31%) in patient with pericardial tamponade
  • Echocardiographic Assessment: Apical 5 Chamber
    • Assess for pericardial effusion
      • anteriorly, posteriorly, apically and circumferentially
      • measure fluid by 2D at end diastole
    • Assess for right right ventricular diastolic collapse
    • Assess ventricular systolic function qualitatively
    • Assess aortic outflow variability by spectral Doppler

  • Transducer at cardiac apex
  • Notch at 3-4 o'clock (slight clockwise rotation)
  • 4th or 5th intercostal space
  • Probe tilted anteriorly (tail down)
