• Shone's Complex
    • Mild left ventricular hypoplasia
    • Hypoplastic mitral valve
    • Hypoplastic aortic valve
    • Dilated right ventricle
  • Shone's Complex
    • Flow turbulence noted across the mitral and aortic valves
    • Hypoplastic mitral valve
    • Hypoplastic aortic valve

The parasternal long axis view is a good view to assess the size of the left ventricle in addition to the left ventricular outflow tract for the presence of a subaortic membrane.  The mitral valve can also be evaluated to assess for hypoplasia and/or the presence of a supravalvar mitral ring or a parachute mitral valve as can be seen in the setting of Shone's complex.

  • Transducer placed on the left sternal border
  • 3rd or 4th intercostal space
  • Notch pointed towards the patient's right shoulder (11 o'clock)
  • Subaortic membrane
  • Supravalvar mitral ring
  • Parachute mitral valve
  • Left ventricular hypoplasia
