The parasternal short axis at the level of the papillary muscles is an optimal view to assess the size of the left ventricle, as well as the size and number of papillary muscles present.  In addition, this view allows for an assessment of left ventricular hypoplasia.

  • Transducer at left sternal border
  • Notch pointed towards patient's left shoulder
  • Probe angled inferiorly (tail up)
  • Single or hypoplastic papillary muscles
  • Left ventricular hypoplasia
