The subcostal abdominal aorta view is good for assessing a hemodyanamically significant coarctation. This is typically manifested by a blunted (low velocity) spectral Doppler pattern with persistence of flow into diastole (diastolic runoff).

- Probe position in subxyphoid location
- Rotate probe so notch at 12 o'clock
- Tilt and sweep probe from right to left until aorta comes into view
- Coarctation of the aorta
- Diastolic runoff in setting of coarctation
- Blunted (decreased) velocities in setting of coarctation
