• Color compare view in abdominal aorta
    • Abnormal continuous flow by color Doppler (persistence of flow into diastole)
  • Spectral Doppler in the abdominal aorta (above baseline)
    • Blunted (low) velocity
    • Persistence of flow into diastole (diastolic runoff)

The subcostal abdominal aorta view is good for assessing a hemodyanamically significant coarctation. This is typically manifested by a blunted (low velocity) spectral Doppler pattern with persistence of flow into diastole (diastolic runoff).

  • Probe position in subxyphoid location
  • Rotate probe so notch at 12 o'clock
  • Tilt and sweep probe from right to left until aorta comes into view
  • Coarctation of the aorta
    • Diastolic runoff in setting of coarctation
    • Blunted (decreased) velocities in setting of coarctation
