  • Complete balanced AV canal
    • Primum ASD
    • Common AV valve
  • Complete AV Canal
    • Small secundum ASD with left to right shunting
    • Small primum ASD with left to right shunting

Echocardiographic Assessment: Subcostal Long Axis Atrial Septum

  • Primum ASD (size and direction of shunting)
  • Assess for additional ASDs (secundum ASD)
  • Common AV valve (size, balance versus unbalance, regurgitation)

  • Transducer located in the abdomen just below xyphoid process
  • Notch at 3 o'clock
  • Transducer tilted anteriorly (tail down)
  • Primum ASD
  • Secundum ASD
  • Common AV valve
