• Normal systemic venous return
    • superior vena cava and inferior vena cava return to right atrium
  • Intact atrial septum
  • Normal laminar flow in superior vena cava (blue flow) and inferior vena cava (red flow)
  • No evidence of shunting across the atrial septum

Often an underutilized view, the high right parasternal view is an excellent view for profiling the superior and inferior vena cavae as they drain into the right atrium and profiling the atrial septum. 

  • Patient placed in right lateral decubitus position
  • Transducer at high right sternal border
  • Notch at 1 o'clock
  • SVC abnormality
    • Stenosis
    • Thrombosis
    • Vegetation
  • Atrial septal defects
    • Sinus venosus ASD
  • Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return
