• The atrial septum appears intact without evidence of atrial septal defects
  • Normal sized right and left atrium
  • The superior vena cava returns normally to the right atrium
  • No atrial level shunting noted by color Doppler
  • The superior vena cava demonstrates normal laminar flow into the right atrium (red flow superiorly)
  • Laminar flow from the inferior vena cava can be seen entering the right atrium (blue flow inferiorly)
  • This is a good view to profile the right upper pulmonary vein as it enters the left atrium (not optimally demonstrated in this clip however).

This subcostal long axis view (also known as the subcostal coronal view) is an ideal view for profiling the atrial septum.  It is an excellent view to profile the right upper pulmonary vein as it enters the left atrium.

  • Transducer located in the abdomen just below xyphoid process
  • Notch at 3 o'clock
  • Transducer tilted anteriorly (tail down)
  • Atrial septal defects
  • Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return
    • Anomalous right sided pulmonary venous drainage
  • Total anomalous pulmonary venous return
