• Normal right and left ventricular size and systolic function
  • Normal interventricular septal configuration (indicative of estimated right ventricular systolic pressures <1/2 systemic)
  • The ventricular septum appears intact without evidence of ventricular septal defects

This subcostal view is optimal for profiling ventricular size and function and can also be used to assess interventricular septal configuration.

  • Transducer on abdomen just below xiphoid process
  • Notch at 6 o'clock
  • Probe tilted towards patient's left shoulder
  • Ventricular septal defects
  • Right ventricular dilation or hypertrophy
  • Left ventricular dilation or hypertrophy
